Well, or somewhere close to it. We’ll even settle for Bentota. Come the 29th Friday, we’ll be setting off for Galle, to reach there in time to stare at the Lit fest going on there. The route we’ll be taking will be mostly along the Galle road, and hopefully we’ll find a few shortcuts. There have to be a few by-roads which cut across the curving Galle road, yes?

Everyone is invited to join us on our trip of epic proportions, either to cycle next to us, or throw water at us while we shout “ahh nangiii” at you. Dangers include sunstroke for the weak skinned, shredded limbs, dehydration and cramps for the weak skilled and death by sudden encounter with maniacal bus driver. Brave them. Join us. Prove yourself worthy and find your true self by the ancient rites of the Sinhalaya.

Or at the very least, get a great workout!
(drop a comment, mail us or use the various other wonderous implements of the Age of Information to get in touch)

damn if I wasn’t going up to Batti that weekend and if I had a bike I’d be up for this. You should do more calls for volunteers for these trips of yours:)

N – Thats too bad man! Do join if you can. And we shall give due warning next time, promise:D Actually our twitter feed does that already..
Jack – Nope no special training other than generally keeping fit. They are mountain bikes as a general rule but not exactly rock hoppers either. If you’re free, roll with us..

My husband and I biked from Wattala to Galle in 2001. Unfortunately I was harassed like crazy starting from Ratmalana onwards.
We still persevered and are glad that we did it. Watch out for very fast traffic, and the 90 degree asphalt drops off the pavement. You will want to continue on to Matara…we didn’t because we couldn’t stand the harrassment!

Sorry to hear about the harassment, the roads can be wild in many ways round here. Glad to hear you made it though!
As for traffic and pavements, we stuck to the side of the road but didn’t climb on pavements
Also, we have moved to sinhalayatravels.com!

How is the traffic to Galle from Colombo? Any alternative routes?

The traffic isn’t too bad most of the time. Though you have to be careful around towns where traffic increases and the speeding buses have less room to maneuver.

Hi Guys back in 2002 i designed a national cycle trail using back roads and estate tracks to cycle from Kalutara to Galle, broken down into 25km rides, with the idea you get to ride and see the real Sri Lanka and not run of the road by erratic bus drivers. I have a few photo copies of the route if you want try it. I am also on the look out for some cycle guides to take people around the back roads of Colombo, know any one who’s interested then send a mail to peter@actionlanka.com
